One note of caution that applies to children and adults equally: iron supplementation should not be started without a confirmed diagnosis via blood test. Iron overdose — particularly in young children — is dangerous. In adults, supplementing without deficiency causes gastrointestinal side effects and, in people with haemochromatosis (a common genetic condition in Australians of Northern European background), can cause progressive organ damage. The test takes one week. It is worth doing before starting any supplement.
